Inaugural Address of the President |
It was a great honor and privilege for me to be inaugurated as the 22nd chairman of the body of directors as of May 17, 2008 on the occasion of the regular general meeting in Yokohama. Dentistry in Japan is now entering a very important era. A wide range of issues such as the relation between supply and demand in dentistry, the increasing need for graduate in-service training systems and the beginning of new dental specialist systems are all important questions that call for answers on the part of all dental practitioners, university departments of dentistry and dental colleges. Now is the time for all of us at this meeting today to unite in order to seek a meaningful solution to the national demand for quality improvement of dental treatments. To achieve this, we need to work toward the goal of improving the quality of pediatric dental treatments and knowledge. The Pediatric Dental Specialist System Committee, organized in October 2004, accredits pediatric dental specialists. We have been |

authorized as the accrediting institution of pediatric dental specialty by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare since March 24, 2006. The society has produced a total of 949 specialists, including 123 instructors as of September 31, 2008. The dental specialist system in pediatric dentistry plays an important role for the guarantee of quality of our pediatric dental treatments. Our society was incorporated on September 1, 2005. This means that it has been recognized by society, implying that we have accepted and are willing to fulfill our full responsibilities. Fulfilling those responsibilities requires that we should address the following pressing needs: 1) the accumulation of basic and clinical data in order to further advance the pediatric dental treatments, 2) the enhancement of the grand design, examination system and rules, as well as the in-service training system of both specialists and dental hygienists in pediatric dentistry, 3) the activation of medical meetings and training seminars that promote the flow of information regarding pediatric dental treatments and medicine, 4) the activation of publicity work on home-page. In this way, we hope to exert ourselves vigorously to maintain and improve oral health in the pediatric field. |
